The Boston Red Sox were reportedly in on a few of the top position players on the market. They were one of the top suitors in the sweepstakes for slugger Kyle Schwarber and star Pete Alonso, but Schwarber signed with the Philadelphia Phillies while Alonso landed with the Baltimore Orioles.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox need to go after a star infielder, and there are a few options on the market.<\/p>\n

Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut predicted on Saturday that the Red Sox would re-sign star infielder Alex Bregman in free agency. Bregman is projected to sign a huge $182 million deal this winter, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic.<\/p>\n

“Even putting aside some of the latest MLB rumors, it\u2019s hard to see Alex Bregman and the Boston Red Sox not agreeing to a long-term deal,” Johnson wrote. “Fans wanted Pete Alonso, but the club didn\u2019t want to make that long-term commitment to a first baseman\/designated hitter, and we can\u2019t necessarily blame them. Bregman proved to be a perfect fit in Boston, and The Athletic\u2019s Ken Rosenthal previously reported that re-signing him is the club\u2019s No. 1 priority. Besides, he should be able to make adjustments to improve his 0.761 OPS at Fenway Park from this past season.”<\/p>\n

Bregman is the clear target for the Red Sox this winter. He was a star player for them last year, while also being a fan favorite in Boston.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox are running out of options to go after with Schwarber and Alonso off the board. Securing a new deal with Bregman, even if it costs a lot of money, would make the most sense.<\/p>\n
