The Athletic\u2019s Ken Rosenthal, Will Sammon and Katie Woo\u00a0revealed earlier this month\u00a0that the Boston Red Sox are open to the idea of building a \u201csuper bullpen.\u201d Robert Su\u00e1rez of the San Diego Padres could be a potential target for the Red Sox.<\/p>\n

Su\u00e1rez has been one of the relievers in baseball over the last two seasons. He has notched 76 saves in the last two years and has been a major reason for the Padres\u2019 success. However, the Padres may not see a need to sign him.<\/p>\n

Su\u00e1rez led the National League in saves last season, but the Padres still traded for Mason Miller from the Athletics. Miller is one of the best young pitchers in baseball and should take over as the closer if Su\u00e1rez leaves. Su\u00e1rez\u2019s departure would not leave the Padres without a closer, which means he may not be their top priority. Meanwhile, the Red Sox could see an opportunity to add an elite arm to their bullpen.<\/p>\n

Aroldis Chapman was the American League Reliever of the Year last year and signed an extension with the Red Sox last season. He seems locked in as Boston\u2019s closer, but adding Su\u00e1rez would essentially give the Red Sox another closer they could deploy in the eighth inning.<\/p>\n

The two could share ninth-inning duties, giving Alex Cora a left-handed and right-handed option at the end of games. Su\u00e1rez had a 2.97 ERA in 69 2\/3 innings of work. He also had a career-high 75 strikeouts.<\/p>\n

In his last 135 games, he has a 2.87 ERA and 134 strikeouts. He is not going to be cheap and he will have plenty of suitors. Spotrac projects him to sign a four-year, $67 million deal. His last contract was a five-year, $46 million deal.<\/p>\n

Su\u00e1rez was so good in the last two seasons that he opted out of the final two years of his deal. Su\u00e1rez would be an amazing addition to the Red Sox bullpen. However, the Red Sox likely have other priorities they will look at first. Also, Su\u00e1rez will have to be willing to join a team where he is not the only closer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
