The Boston Red Sox need to make some big moves in the offseason if they want to get back to the postseason and beyond next year. They’re in danger of losing Alex Bregman in free agency, but they could make moves like retaining him or signing other stars to make up for his loss.<\/p>\n

Two of the potential stars the Red Sox could pursue include Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber and New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso. Either slugger would be a huge addition to the team, but who would they prefer?<\/p>\n

Red Sox legend David Ortiz recently made his opinion on the Scharber versus Alonso debate very clear.<\/p>\n

“Either way, you can be satisfied,” Ortiz told Joey Copponi and Scott Neville on the “ITM Podcast” on Friday. “You’re talking about two monsters. But if I had to pick one, because I have Roman Anthony as a left-handed batter, I would go with a right-handed bat. There are a lot of left-handed power pitchers coming out of the bullpen. Which with these guys, they don’t really care. But you know (opponents) are going to be doing the match-ups. When you have two lefties, one behind the other. I think we’ve loaded up really well with lefties. One right-handed power hitter to take advantage of the monster, it’ll be a plus.<\/p>\n

“But, if we sign Bregman, I don’t care who we go for. Because at the end of the day, you can put them in a mix: Schwarber, Bregman, Roman, or vice versa, and you’d be in good shape.”<\/p>\n

Either slugger would fit perfectly for the Red Sox, but Alonso would fit their lineup a bit better.<\/p>\n

Alonso provides the right-handed bat that Boston needs. He also provides the ability to play first base for the first few years of his next contract if needed. This would give the Red Sox a lot more flexibility going forward compared to Schwarber.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox can’t go wrong with either option, though.<\/p>\n
