San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an optimistic update Wednesday on quarterback Brock Purdy\u2019s potential return to action. For the fourth straight week, Purdy was listed as a limited participant in practice, but Shanahan made it clear this week\u2019s workload will look much different.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be an aggressive practice,\u201d Shanahan told reporters. \u201cWe\u2019ve just got to put \u2018limited\u2019 if it\u2019s not exactly how it normally is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Purdy, who has missed the last six games due to a lingering turf toe injury, appears to be trending toward returning Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Shanahan laid out the team\u2019s plan earlier in the week, saying the goal was for Purdy to complete \u201cthree aggressive practices\u201d while taking first-team reps with the offense.<\/p>\n

The 49ers\u2019 starter originally suffered the injury in Week 1 against the Seahawks and aggravated it in Week 4 versus Jacksonville, forcing him back to the sidelines. Shanahan said the team\u2019s patience is paying off. \u201cI think each week it\u2019s gone better, with last week being the best,\u201d he said. \u201cEach week has been different. If he takes a big step forward this week like he did last week, he should have a good chance to play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite how well backup quarterback Mac Jones has played in Purdy\u2019s absence, Shanahan made it clear that health\u2014not performance\u2014is the deciding factor. \u201cIt\u2019s not a hard decision,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just more about Brock\u2019s health. It\u2019s been awesome how Mac\u2019s played. He\u2019s been great. But we\u2019ve got a lot of confidence in Brock, and we know Brock will play at a high level, too, as long as he\u2019s healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones has performed admirably, throwing for over 2,100 yards and 13 touchdowns across eight starts while leading San Francisco to a 5\u20133 record in those games. Still, Shanahan\u2019s comments make it clear the 49ers view Purdy as their franchise quarterback and are eager to have him back under center as soon as he\u2019s ready.<\/p>\n

Along with Purdy, rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee) is also expected to return to practice on a limited basis this week. Shanahan said both players are close to being cleared for full participation and could suit up against Arizona if all goes well.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about getting them to a place where there\u2019s no risk of setbacks,\u201d Shanahan said. \u201cJudging by what we\u2019ve seen, we\u2019re getting close to that point.\u201d<\/p>\n
