Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has a decision to make. Does he chase New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso or Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Scwharber in free agency?<\/p>\n

Both would add a much-needed power bat to Boston\u2019s lineup. But Masslive.com\u2019s Christoper Smith notes Alonso brings something extra to the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlonso, a right-handed hitter, could be used at both first and DH with (Triston) Casas, a left-handed hitter, at first base vs. righty starters,\u201d Smith reports.<\/p>\n

That isn\u2019t lost on Breslow, who watched Casas go down in May with a season-ending knee injury.<\/p>\n

Valuing Flexibility<\/h2>\n

\u201cI think flexibility is very valuable,\u201d Breslow Monday said at the\u00a0GM Meetings in Las Vegas, according to Smith. \u201cThere is certainly a talent threshold that is elite enough to warrant just penciling somebody in.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf David Ortiz were available in his prime, then certainly that\u2019s just something that you commit. But given we have as an example, four outfielders that we think are capable of playing every day. The DH spot could be an opportunity to keep guys fresh and keep bats in the lineup,\u201d Breslow added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think flexibility just given the versatility of the roster gives (manager) Alex (Cora) more ways to deploy and keep guys fresh and optimize matchups. But we\u2019ll see what the market dictates and what makes the most sense for the roster,\u201d Breslow concluded.<\/p>\n

Part-Time DH?<\/h2>\n

Breslow\u2019s line of thinking would seem to mesh with what The Boston Globe\u2019s Tim Healey suggests.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow open is Pete Alonso to spending time at DH? Like\u00a0(Alex) Bregman, Alonso is looking for the big payday in free agency he didn\u2019t get last offseason,\u201d Healey reports. \u201cFor the Sox and others, Alonso being willing to split time between first base and DH would make him more attractive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, Alonso should probably join\u00a0(Kyle) Schwarber\u00a0as a full-time DH, but even then you can make a pretty good case for the former as a better investment,\u201d MLB Trade Rumors reports.<\/p>\n

Boston Roots?<\/h2>\n

Oh, and then there\u2019s nugget of knowledge Monday from WEEI\u2019s Rob Bradford.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings I learned today: Pete Alonso\u2019s wife is from Quincy,\u201d Bradford posted on X.<\/p>\n

A five-time All-Star, Alonso was a free agent last winter and didn\u2019t find a multi-year, nine-figure contract to his liking so he returned to the Mets, who gave him a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out clause.<\/p>\n

The two-time Home Run Derby champion said after the regular season ended he would\u00a0opt out of his contract\u00a0and\u00a0hit the open market,\u00a0which he did last week.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old Alonso hit 38 home runs this season, which was\u00a0eighth-best\u00a0in the majors, and\u00a0drove in 126 runs, second only to\u00a0Schwarber.<\/p>\n

Alonso, a home-grown Mets star, spent seven seasons in Queens. This year he became the\u00a0franchise\u2019s all-time home run leader, surpassing eight-time All-Star\u00a0Darryl Strawberry.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n
