It\u2019s time for the Boston Red Sox to go big or go home in free agency. Just what that looks like, however, is up for debate.<\/p>\n

The two best sluggers on the open market are New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. If Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is deciding between the two, MLB.com\u2019s Ian Browne knows what the best option is.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d say Alonso for two reasons. It\u2019s right-handed power from a player who would play half of his games in Fenway Park. And Alonso doesn\u2019t have a\u00a0qualifying offer\u00a0attached to him like Schwarber does,\u201d Browne notes.<\/p>\n

Back To Beantown?<\/h2>\n

\u201cThat said, Schwarber was comfortable the first time he was in Boston, and I\u2019m sure he would be again,\u201d Browne adds. \u201cIt is going to be fascinating to see how aggressive the Phillies are in trying to bring Schwarber back. It has certainly been a great union between player and city. It feels like they were meant for each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cYet it also feels like the Phillies need to make some fundamental changes in terms of roster construction,\u201d Browne concludes.<\/p>\n

Ready To Spend<\/h2>\n

Regardless of which slugger Breslow decides to pursue, the New York Post\u2019s Joel Sherman believes Boston is ready to back up the Brink\u2019s truck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is strong industry belief that the Red Sox aren\u2019t going to just talk about spending this year, but actually act,\u201d Sherman reports.<\/p>\n

Market Projections<\/h2>\n

MLB Trade Rumors projects Schwarber will return to Philadelphia on a five-year, $135 million contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Phillies have made no secret of their desire to bring Schwarber back,\u201d according to MLB Trade Rumors. \u201cPhils\u2019 players and executives have effusively praised his clubhouse presence and leadership on top of the dominant results. They issued him a qualifying offer, which he\u2019ll obviously reject. That ensures they\u2019d get a compensatory pick after the fourth round of the 2026 draft if he signs elsewhere, but their offseason priority is to keep him around.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re likely to face a push from the Reds, whose lineup would be transformed if they can convince the Cincinnati-area native to play for his childhood favorite team. There\u2019s an argument for the Cubs bringing him back if (Kyle) Tucker walks, while the Red Sox and Orioles could be long shot suitors,\u201d MLB Trade Rumors adds.<\/p>\n

Schwarber is a\u00a0National League MVP finalist\u00a0after\u00a0leading the league\u00a0with a\u00a0career-high 56 home runs.<\/p>\n
