New York Yankees relief pitcher Devin Williams is set to enter free agency yet again this season, and the Miami Marlins could jump on the former All-Star.<\/p>\n

Williams was traded to the Yankees ahead of the 2025 season on his one-year, $8.6 million deal, but didn’t quite perform up to standard in the Bronx. After posting a 1.25 ERA with the Brewers in 2024, Williams’ ERA ballooned to 4.79 through 67 appearances in 2025. He allowed 37 runs over the course of the season, which is 20 more than he had allowed in any of his prior MLB campaigns.<\/p>\n

Kevin Barral of Fish on First reports the Marlins will target the closer in the offseason, filling a vacant position in the Marlins’ bullpen.<\/p>\n

“Per multiple reports, the opportunity to return to a closer’s role will play a factor in which team Williams decides to go to,” wrote Barral. “The Marlins went with a closer by committee in 2025. Even if Williams does not pitch the ninth inning every time, we can assume he would be deployed in the highest leverage situations possible.”<\/p>\n

The Marlins are looking to add a high-leverage piece to their bullpen this offseason, and Williams fits the bill despite his poor season in 2025. Despite his massive ERA, he had a 2.68 FIP, which nearly matches his mark in 2023, when he had a 1.53 ERA through 61 appearances. He also maintained his sky-high strikeout rate during 2025, sending 90 batters back to the dugout over the course of the season.<\/p>\n

He had a strikeout rate of 34.7 percent during the regular season, which ranked him in the 97th percentile in MLB.<\/p>\n

Spotrac values Williams at a one-year, $5.7 million deal \u2014 which is a great value pickup for a player of Williams’ caliber. Nine different Marlins recorded a save in 2025, so an experienced closer such as Williams is a step in the right direction for 2026, and could give the Marlins the extra push they need to get into the postseason.<\/p>\n
