The Buffalo Bills\u2019 defense has a glaring problem, and it starts deep – literally. With Damar Hamlin landing on injured reserve, the back end of the secondary has become more exposed than ever.<\/p>\n

Taylor Rapp and rookie Cole Bishop are plugging holes, but opposing offenses are finding ways to exploit that safety tandem week after week. And if Buffalo wants to stay relevant in the AFC playoff race, they\u2019ll need reinforcements – fast.<\/p>\n

Good news for Brandon Beane? There\u2019s no shortage of veteran safeties just waiting for a phone call.<\/p>\n

Even better, Beane has never been shy about making in-season additions. So, who should be on the shortlist?<\/p>\n

Whitehead has been the model of consistency over a seven-year career, starting nearly every game he’s suited up for since his rookie season. He\u2019s physical, instinctive, and, importantly for Buffalo, experienced in both single-high and split-safety roles.<\/p>\n

In short: Whitehead checks all the boxes for what the Bills need right now. He\u2019s a plug-and-play option who wouldn\u2019t command major dollars and would instantly raise the floor of the safety room, whether or not Hamlin returns this season. Justin Simmons – The Smart, Safe Bet<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Yes, Simmons is 31, and no, he\u2019s not exactly at the peak of his powers anymore. But what he brings is poise, intelligence, and range – something that\u2019s been sorely missing in Buffalo\u2019s secondary as of late. He signed a short-term in-season deal with the Falcons last year, so the expectation is he\u2019d do the same again in 2025, likely for something close to the veteran minimum.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a flashy move. But Simmons can absolutely help stabilize a shaky safety unit while giving the defense someone who won\u2019t get lost in complex coverage checks. For a team seriously thinking about playing deep into January, he\u2019s a steadying force worth bringing in.<\/p>\n

Marcus Maye – Physical Depth with Upside<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Buffalo fans remember Marcus Maye. From 2017 to 2021, he gave the Bills fits whenever they traveled to New Jersey to take on the Jets. He\u2019s always been known for being a downhill attacker – a strong tackler who doesn\u2019t shy away from contact.<\/p>\n

The kind of chess piece defensive coordinators love. But off-field concerns have cooled his market, and teams have been hesitant to bring him in, with both Houston and Baltimore moving on from him this season.<\/p>\n

That said, the Bills are in desperate need of an impact player. Not just a body – someone who can change the dynamic. Gardner-Johnson, still just 26, has proven he can be that kind of player.<\/p>\n
