The Boston Red Sox have a logjam in the outfield, and their offseason decisions will have a major impact on rookie phenom Roman Anthony.Anthony was ranked one of the top prospects in all of baseball heading into the 2025 season. The Red Sox called up the rookie phenom in June shortly after trading away Rafael Devers, and Anthony exceeded expectations. The 21-year-old slashed .292\/.396\/.859 with eight home runs, 32 RBIs and a 3.1 WAR in 71 games played. Anthony quickly overtook Boston’s leadoff spot and helped lead the team to a playoff spot before getting injured.<\/p>\n

In addition to Anthony, Boston’s outfield is flooded with talent, consisting of Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida. There have been continued rumors that the Red Sox would end up trading one of their surplus of outfielders, and after an early playoff exit, the offseason offers a perfect time to make a change.<\/p>\n

MassLive’s Christopher Smith detailed how Anthony’s role on the Red Sox will change depending on different potential offseason outfielder trades the team could make.<\/p>\n

“(Anthony) will be an everyday player and presumably the leadoff hitter against both righties and lefties,” Smith wrote Friday. “But whether he plays left field, right field or a combination of both positions will depend on how the Red Sox\u2019 offseason unfolds.<\/p>\n

“If the Red Sox trade Jarren Duran, Anthony would be the everyday left fielder. If the Red Sox trade Abreu, Anthony would likely be used every day in right field. If the Red Sox keep both Duran and Abreu, Anthony likely would move back and forth between left field and right field depending on who sits in a given game.”<\/p>\n

Anthony is a talented player and one of the league’s top young stars. The rookie phenom figures to be an everyday player for the Red Sox next season, but the team’s offseason decisions will have a major impact on his role. Boston is reportedly in the market to add pitching this offseason, but trading away one of its outfielders would open a clear path for Anthony to get more playing time.<\/p>\n
