The Boston Red Sox had one of the best pitching staffs in baseball this year, ranking fifth in ERA. However, there\u2019s always room for improvement.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s Craig Breslow\u2019s mindset heading into this offseason. While he\u2019s done a good job adding pitching depth over the last few seasons, now his goal is to add more talent at the top of the rotation.<\/p>\n

Trading for Garrett Crochet last winter was a great start, but this season proved that the Red Sox still need a legit No. 2 starter behind him \u2014 someone like Joe Ryan or Dylan Cease.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday\u2019s episode of NESN\u2019s \u201c310 To Left\u201d podcast, Breslow emphasized that Boston needs to focus on adding top-end starting pitching this winter rather than merely accumulating depth.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we need to, and what we\u2019ll do over the course of the offseason, is take a step back and really recognize what type of potential pitching additions or acquisitions really move the needle for us, because we do have what I would suggest is a strong group of pitching depth,\u201d Breslow said. \u201cAnd so we want to make sure that any additions that we make actually improve our team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breslow\u2019s right in that the Red Sox already have plenty of pitching depth, which is a great starting point. They have an impressive quantity of solid arms, but they need more quality to become a true championship contender.<\/p>\n

Despite losing several starters to injuries last season, including Tanner Houck, Hunter Dobbins and Richard Fitts, Boston still got valuable contributions from the likes of Payton Tolle, Connelly Early and Kyle Harrison.<\/p>\n

The real issue, however, was not having a viable No. 2 starter after Crochet, which was exposed during their AL Wild Card Series loss to the New York Yankees. After Crochet won Game 1, Brayan Bello recorded just seven outs in Game 2 and Alex Cora was forced to start Early \u2014 a rookie \u2014 in Game 3.<\/p>\n

Elite starting pitching is crucial to winning short postseason series (just look at the Los Angeles Dodgers), and that\u2019s where the Red Sox need to improve this offseason.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n
