Will the Boston Red Sox signing New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso turn into another impossible dream?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what former New York Mets acting general manager Zack Scott is saying about Alonso\u2019s future as a free agent.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooks like he may be back with the Mets\u2026 on a short deal after he once again overplays his hand in the market. Rinse and rePete Alonso!\u201d Scott posted on X.<\/p>\n

Alonso said after the regular season ended he will\u00a0opt out of his contract\u00a0and\u00a0hit the open market.<\/p>\n

A five-time All-Star, Alonso was a free agent last winter and didn\u2019t find a multi-year, nine-figure contract to his liking so he returned to the Mets, who gave him a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out clause.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0New York Post\u2019s Mike Puma\u00a0has an idea of how much it will take to sign the two-time Home Run Derby champion this time around.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlonso, who turns 31 in December, is expected to seek a contract of at least seven years \u2014 a length consistent with deals the player\u2019s agent, Scott Boras, completed in recent seasons for Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman at the same age (Chapman received a six-year extension from the Giants after his first season with the club on a different contract),\u201d Puma wrote Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cChapman perhaps serves as a guide for Alonso: The third baseman, with a qualifying offer attached, arrived to the Giants on a three-year deal (with an opt-out)\u00a0worth $54 million before the 2024 season,\u201d Puma noted. \u201cBut weeks before he could have opted out, Chapman agreed to a six-year contract worth $151 million.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alonso, a home-grown Mets star, spent seven seasons in Queens. This year he became the\u00a0franchise\u2019s all-time home run leader, surpassing eight-time All-Star\u00a0Darryl Strawberry.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old Alonso hit 38 home runs this season, which was\u00a0eighth-best\u00a0in the majors, and\u00a0drove in 126 runs, second only to Philadelphia Phillies slugger\u00a0Kyle Schwarber.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
