1906<\/strong>
\nThe Pale Hose bid for a World Series upset dimmed with a 1-0 loss at home to the Cubs, drawing the series even at 2-2. Mordecai Brown exacted revenge for a one-run loss to Nick Altrock<\/strong> in the Series opener, holding the White Sox to two hits and just two baserunners in scoring position. For his part Altrock was stellar, allowing a run in the seventh inning after a leadoff single, two sacrifice bunts, and another single.<\/p>\n

Further shadowing the White Sox hopes was the fact that they\u2019d scored just seven runs in the first four games. However, the Hitless Wonders had a surprise in store for their crosstown rivals …<\/p>\n

1966<\/strong>
\nIn another one of White Sox GM Ed Short<\/strong>\u2019s best moves, two-time All-Star pitcher Juan Pizarro<\/strong> (nursing a bad arm) was dealt to the Pirates for minor league pitcher Wilbur Wood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wood blossomed in Chicago thanks to his knuckleball \u2014 first as a record-setting relief pitcher, then as a four-time 20-game winner (1971-74, totaling 90 wins). He started 181 games and in each of those four years pitched at least 320 innings. Wood would also make three All-Star teams. He pitched for the Sox through the 1978 season.<\/p>\n

1981<\/strong>
\nFuture Hall of Fame manager Jim Leyland<\/strong> was signed away from the Tigers organization, where he was managing in the Detroit minor league system, and took his first MLB job \u2014 third-base coach under manager Tony La Russa<\/strong>. Leyland proved an able lieutenant and quickly became a sought-after manager in his own right, and in 1985 the Pittsburgh Pirates named him their manager.<\/p>\n

Later on, Leyland\u2019s name would come up often as a possible future White Sox manager as openings became available, but he balked due to how poorly he felt the franchise treated La Russa.<\/p>\n

1993<\/strong>
\nDreams of a miraculous comeback were dashed on a brisk 48\u00b0 night, as the White Sox fell to Toronto, 6-3, in Game 6 of the ALCS. Despite the final score, this one was a nail-biter for eight innings, as the Blue Jays jumped ahead in the second and the White Sox knotted it, 2-2, in the third before Toronto scored one more in the fourth.<\/p>\n

That third inning from the White Sox ended up breaking them for the series, as a bases-loaded, one-out situation was met with just two runs, and on a HBP (Frank Thomas<\/strong>) and ground out (Robin Ventura<\/strong>) at that. For the rest of the game and excepting a Warren Newson <\/strong>homer in the ninth, the White Sox only got one batter as far as second base. The eventual GWRBI in the fourth came thanks two two White Sox errors, first by Ventura and then by Joey Cora<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As much as you might think that a Game 7 in Chicago would have been an advantage, in this series five of the six games were won by visitors, including this Game 6 triumph by Toronto.<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong>
\nIn one of the strangest endings to a postseason game in history, the White Sox beat the Angels, 2-1, in Game 2 of the ALCS.<\/p>\n

With the game tied in the ninth inning, catcher A.J. Pierzynski<\/strong> ran to first on a third strike that bounced in the dirt. Angels catcher Josh Paul<\/strong> (a former Sox player) thought Pierzynski struck out without a \u201cdrop,\u201d and thus never threw down to first base, as required if a third strike touches the ground. Home plate umpire Doug Eddings agreed with Pierzynski and let him remain at first base, over the howling protests of several Angels players and manager Mike Scoscia.<\/p>\n

After pinch-runner Pablo Ozuna<\/strong> stole second, Joe Crede<\/strong>\u2019s double brought home the game-winner and tied the series at a game apiece.<\/p>\n

Hardly noted was Mark Buehrle <\/strong>tossing a complete game, for the win. That complete game would loom larger as the ALCS proceeded.<\/p>\n

2021<\/strong>
\nThe White Sox were beaten by the Astros, 10-1, in Game 4 of the ALDS, eliminating them from the playoffs.<\/p>\n

But the Sox, despite numerous injuries that caused key players to miss significant stretches of time, still had won 93 games and the Central Division title. They had consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 2003-06, and for the first time in the 120-year history of the franchise made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.<\/p>\n

They also beat their crosstown rivals the Cubs, in five out of six meetings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
