If the Boston Red Sox want to add some power to their lineup, there will be a pretty good option on the open market this winter. That\u2019s because SNY reports New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso said Sunday he will opt out of his contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying for this organization, this city \u2013 they\u2019ve continued to believe in me,\u201d Alonso said after the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention. \u201cI love playing here. There\u2019s some great guys in this clubhouse, some great people on the staff. Every single day, it\u2019s been a pleasure coming to work and putting on the orange and blue.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve really appreciated it and have been nothing but full of gratitude every single day,\u201d Alonso continued. \u201cNothing is guaranteed, but we\u2019ll see what happens \u2013 I\u2019ve loved being a Met. Hopefully, they\u2019ve appreciated me the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alonso, a home-grown Mets star, spent seven seasons in Queens. This year he became the franchise\u2019s all-time home run leader, surpassing eight-time All-Star Darryl Strawberry.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old Alonso has hit at least 34 home runs every season, except for the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign when he slugged 16 homers in 57 games. This year, he hit 38 home runs, which was eighth-best in the majors, and drove in 126 runs, second only to Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber.<\/p>\n

Alonso was a free agent last year and didn\u2019t find a multi-year, nine-figure contract to his liking so he signed a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out clause.<\/p>\n

Several reports during the 2025 season linked Alonso to the Red Sox, who saw\u00a0first baseman\u00a0Triston Casas\u00a0go down in May with a season-ending knee injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill the Red Sox moving of roughly $250 million of\u00a0Rafael Devers\u2019 contract in a trade to the Giants motivate them to use a chunk on Alonso to attack the Green Monster?\u201d\u00a0the New York Post\u2019s Joel Sherman\u00a0wrote in August.<\/p>\n

MLB.com\u2019s Mark Feinsand\u00a0noted last month the Red Sox, Mets and Giants are potential fits for Alonso.<\/p>\n
