{"id":10006,"date":"2024-11-18T23:57:21","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T23:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportnews.azontree.com\/?p=10006"},"modified":"2024-11-18T23:57:21","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T23:57:21","slug":"patriots-rookie-in-jerod-mayos-doghouse-after-another-demotion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportnews.azontree.com\/?p=10006","title":{"rendered":"Patriots Rookie In Jerod Mayo&#8217;s Doghouse After Another Demotion"},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"post-1964980\"><!--?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ??--><!--?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ??--><!--?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ??-->Javon Baker was forced into special teams snaps because the New England Patriots didn\u2019t trust the rookie wideout on offense.<\/p>\n<p>But now Jerod Mayo and company might not even trust Baker to do that.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth-round pick was pulled off kick return after he received the first two kickoffs in New England\u2019s 28-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the kick returns, he was back there on the first couple snaps and he didn\u2019t execute the way we all had hoped he would,\u201d Mayo said of Baker during a conference call Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Baker returned the two kickoffs for 62 yards, including a 46-yard return on the game\u2019s opening play. It set up the Patriots in favorable field position, but Mayo took issue with Baker\u2019s hesitance.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI know it was a big return, even on that big return it was one of those situations, \u2018Is he coming out? Is he not coming out?&#8217;\u201d Mayo said. \u201cAnd same thing with the second kickoff return.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Baker muffed the second kickoff before he recovered it. His nonchalant effort thereafter went for a 16-yard return and set the Patriots up at their 20-yard line. A fair catch, which was in play for Baker, would\u2019ve given the Patriots an additional 10 yards of field position.<\/p>\n<p>Patriots kick returners accepted fair catches on each kickoff after that.<\/p>\n<p>Baker was limited to five offensive snaps against the Rams. The Central Florida product now has played 19 offensive snaps in six games this season with four inactive designations.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Baker told NESN.com entering Week 11 he felt his behind-the-scenes development was going well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything\u2019s good,\u201d Baker said last Wednesday. \u201cI\u2019m just playing my role.
