ESPN’s new three-part series Believers: Boston Red Sox, debuts today. The series dives into the team’s 86-year championship drought and the inspiring journey of the 2004 Red Sox.
The Red Sox’s 2004 season is still remembered as one of the most remarkable in baseball history. Facing elimination against the New York Yankees in the ALCS, the team rallied from a 3-0 deficit, won four straight games, and went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, ending the 86-year championship drought.
For generations, Red Sox fans have carried both devotion and dread because of decades of near-misses, heartbreaking losses, and what became known as the “Curse of the Bambino.” Still, no one in Boston ever gave up hope.
Believers: Boston Red Sox focuses on the city, fanbase, and borderline-religious faith that carried them through decades of disappointment. It was executive produced by Ben Affleck alongside directors Gotham Chopra and Lauren Fisher.
“Some sports fandoms transcend and become more like a religion, with Red Sox Nation as the prime example,” Fisher said. “Believers shows how decades of devotion, heartbreak, and history shaped not just the team, but the soul of Boston.”
The series brings together players, fans, athletes, and celebrities. Affleck, Matt Damon, Bill Burr, Uzo Aduba share their takes alongside 2004 Red Sox legends David Ortiz, Johnny Damon, Curt Schilling, Kevin Millar, and Bronson Arroyo.
Together, they tell the story of how the 2004 Red Sox overcame the Yankees dynasty and finally rid themselves of an 86-year-old curse.
