Gary Cohen made headline recently for openly questioning during a live broadcast why Chicago Cubs rookie Matt Shaw would miss a game to attend Charlie Kirk’s memorial.
Mikey McCoy, Kirk’s former chief of staff, took to social media to slam the New York Mets announcer over his remarks.
“A little over a month ago Charlie’s dream came true … he got the opportunity to walk on Wrigley Field and after – see his friend Matt Shaw hit a home run,” McCoy posted on X.
“A month later, Charlie is gone and Matt Shaw is receiving backlash for attending his friend’s memorial. Shame on Gary Cohen.”
The response came as a result of Cohen’s comments during a recent broadcast.
“I don’t want to talk about any of the politics of it, but the thought of leaving your team in the middle of a race for any reason other than a family emergency, really strikes me as weird,” Cohen said.
The Cubs lost 1-0 to the Reds over the weekend. Cohen said Shaw’s “lack of presence was felt.”
Shaw, who attended the service after Kirk’s wife, Erika, invited him, told media outlets he spoke with manager Craig Counsell, president Jed Hoyer and several of the veterans on the Cubs roster before he missed the game.
“I made sure that everybody I talked to, I had their support, that they knew why I was going, that I wasn’t leaving just to leave, that it was something that was really important to my faith,” Shaw said, per the Chicago Tribune. “It was really nice to see how everyone was able to support me in that moment.
“I felt as though it was something that was really important for me to do. … I was very thankful for how the team responded, allowing me to do that was really special.”
