Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman probably didn’t mean any harm in 2019 when he famously tweeted “iCYMI: Talk to me when when he has 33% of my Super Bowl Titles” in response to a tweet about Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes having 36% of Aikman’s passing touchdowns so early into his career.
Well, that tweet has become legendary but for all of the wrong reasons (if you’re a Cowboys fan, that is).
Five months after Aikman tweeted the now infamous tweet, Mahomes won his first Super Bowl. It was the first of his career and the first for KC in 50 years. Just like that, Mahomes had indeed done what Aikman challenged him to do.
Cowboys legend Troy Aikman is eating his words after what Patrick Mahomes just did
It only got worse for Aikman. By February 2024, four and a half years after the tweet, Mahomes had tied Aikman in Super Bowl wins after the Chiefs beat the 49ers in overtime of Super Bowl LVIII, giving him three championships and making this tweet age even worse.
To make matters somehow worse, Mahomes has officially passed Aikman in another stat, passing his official passing yards in the Chiefs’ 22-9 win over the Giants. Aikman had thrown for 32,942 yards during his NFL career and Mahomes now has 33,021 yards on his résumé.
Again, Aikman probably didn’t mean any harm tweeting what he did. At the time, Mahomes was just entering his third year in the league and second as a starter. The Chiefs quarterback won the MVP award in 2018 and people were fawning all over him so Aikman simply wanted to remind people that the NFL’s new golden boy hadn’t accomplished anything close to what he had yet.
Well, that’s obviously not the case now. Mahomes matched Aikman in Super Bowl titles not even half a decade later and now has surpassed him on the passing yards leaderboard. The game is much different than it was when Aikman played but stats are stats and Mahomes has made sure that people won’t ever stop talking about the now infamous tweet.
