When the Green Bay Packers selected Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft they hoped he would become a key part of the offense. After a slow start, he showed signs of life against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. In his first third career NFL game, Golden had his best performance to date.
The Former Longhorn star hauled in four catches for 52 yards while averaging 13 yards per catch. He led the Packers in receiving yards and finished second in receptions behind only Josh Jacobs, who had five. It was an encouraging sign for the Packers’ offense, which needs Golden to reach his full potential.
While Golden’s career is just getting started, he is already in a prime situation to get a lot of targets. The Packers offense is currently without wide receivers Christian Watson and Jayden Reed, who broke his collarbone in Week 2. With Reed out for the foreseeable future, Love will be relying more on Golden to get open and make an impact.

Following his best game of the season, the Houston native has six receptions for 68 yards. Those numbers should continue to grow as his chemistry with Jordan Love improves. During his college career, Golden showed that he could make adjustments, which has paid off so far during the first month of his NFL career.
For many who watched what Golden did at Texas, his success against Cleveland came as no surprise. In his only season as a Longhorn, the 22-year-old shined. With Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers under center, he was a human highlight reel, hauling in 58 receptions for 987 yards. Those are the type of numbers Green Bay envisions him putting up.
With the season far from over, a few more big performances should be on the horizon for Golden. He finally seems to be becoming a bigger part of the offense that is looking for a spark. If he can continue to build on his success, the Packers’ passing game will be hard to stop.
