The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday hosted a slew of defenders for workouts, including former University of Colorado defensive back Shilo Sanders according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.
Sanders is the son of Deion Sanders, and went undrafted in this year’s draft before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay released Sanders at final cuts. He played 83 snaps in three preseason games and posted three tackles and one quarterback pressure. Pro Football Focus also tagged him with three missed tackles.

It’s unlikely the 49ers were aiming to bring in Sanders as a practice squad player since he’ll need some development if he’s going to be impactful in the NFL.
The same goes for familiar face Jaylen Mahoney, who was part of Tuesday’s workout. He was an undrafted rookie with the 49ers in the 2024 draft and he spent most of last season on the practice squad. Mahoney played three games and put up three tackles while primarily contributing on special teams in 2024. He was let go at final cuts this year.
Brandon Joseph was the third DB who worked out for the 49ers. He played in 16 games across two seasons as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions in 2023 and 2024. Joseph started one of those contests and posted 14 tackles with one pass breakup.
Linebacker Isaiah Thomas, and defensive ends William Bradley-King and Titus Leo.

Bradley-King is a familiar name for fans who closely follow the 49ers. He was with the club this preseason and had some productive moments. He played in four regular season games between the 2021 and 2022 seasons as a seventh-round pick of the Washington Commanders and had 0.5 sacks. Bradley-King had two pressures in two preseason games with the 49ers this year.
Thomas was a seventh-round pick in the 2022 draft by the Cleveland Browns and played in 12 games with the Browns and Lions between the 2022 and 2024 campaigns. He has 17 tackles and two fumble recoveries in his career.
The Indianapolis Colts selected Leo in the sixth round last year. He spent just four games with them and didn’t record a sack.
It makes sense the 49ers are looking for defensive end depth after Nick Bosa’s injury. The defensive back group may just be a check in on some free agents, but they could also be looking for some internal depth in their secondary since cornerbacks Eli Apple and Derrick Canteen are the only defensive backs on the practice squad roster.
