The Boston Red Sox are nearing the end of the season, and are looking to make their first postseason appearance since 2021. After that, they’ll have to focus on the offseason.

There’s a possibility in the offseason that their star leader, Alex Bregman, decides to walk in free agency. They’ll need to replace him, and Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy believes they could get a replacement in St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado.

“This fit isn’t as obvious. Boston was at least on Arenado’s list and there was a time in which it seemed like a deal was possible. But, the Red Sox signed Bregman. If Bregman were to leave this offseason, then the fit is obvious. If Bregman stays, then there’s still an argument that the Red Sox could need a boost at first base, which last year Arenado made it known he’d be willing to play the spot,”

This season, Arenado slashed .236/.292/.365/.656 with 10 homers and 49 RBI. Arenado also only played 102 games due to a shoulder injury.

Arenado would be a good defensive replacement at the hot corner, as he is a 10-time Gold Glover and a six-time Platinum Glover. However, his bat is way worse than Bregman’s, as seen in his mediocre statline.

Hopefully, the Sox figure out a way to keep Bregman, as he is the overall better player. Though, if he does walk, if the Sox can get Arenado on a good deal, it could be a good move.
