Brock Purdy injury update: Quarterback will reportedly sit Week 3, but Week 4 return is possible

The San Francisco 49ers will have to play without starting quarterback Brock Purdy in Week 3. Despite getting in some limited practices this week, Purdy will reportedly be ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

But it doesn’t sound like Purdy will remain out for much longer. After a promising week of recovery, Purdy might be able to play in Week 4 as long as he doesn’t suffer a setback.

The 25-year-old Purdy is dealing with two separate injuries: a sprained left shoulder and turf toe. Purdy sustained those injuries during the team’s Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks. He threw for 277 yards and two scores in the outing.

With Purdy sidelined in Week 2, former New England Patriots first-round pick Mac Jones got the start. Jones performed well against the New Orleans Saints, tossing three touchdowns. He’ll look for similar success against the Cardinals in Week 3.

After spending his first three seasons with the Patriots, Jones spent the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars before signing with the 49ers this offseason.

When healthy, Purdy has shown immense upside as a starter. In his second season, Purdy tossed 31 touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl appearance and a fourth-place finish in the MVP voting.

Things fell back to earth last season, as Purdy managed just 20 touchdowns in 15 games. The 49ers struggled with injuries on offense, which may have limited his numbers.

Despite the drop in production, Purdy signed a massive five-year, $265 million extension with the 49ers in May. He’ll assume the starting role immediately once he’s ready to return to action.

The 49ers are looking to bounce back after going just 6-11 last season. The team is off to a strong start so far, and is a perfect 2-0 entering Sunday’s game.
