Few Atlanta Braves players have had the type of performance that Nacho Alvarez Jr. did on Sunday afternoon against the Detroit Tigers. The 22 year-old infielder collected three hits including his first TWO career home runs, and the game-tying RBI single while the Braves were down to their last strike.
Thanks to Alvarez and a fellow rookie teammate, the Braves earned their seventh straight victory and completed a sweep of the AL Central leading Tigers. Nacho has been pressed into action this season because of Austin Riley’s injury, but the results he has produced should be enough to show the Braves brass why he could be a valuable part of the roster next season.

Nacho Alvarez Jr.’s versatility could prove to be a valuable part of the Braves 2026 roster
Nacho Alvarez Jr.’s probably isn’t in line to start anywhere around the diamond next season, but his abundance of skills can provide plenty of value to the Braves. Nacho has played great defense at third base this season and on Sunday, he showcased the value he can provide with his bat.
The Braves 2026 bench is far from set in stone, and with each waiver claim they bring in Nacho Alvarez’s competition only grows. However, none of the recent middle infield acquisitions have the upside and years of control that Alvarez Jr. has. His .249/.310/.355 slash line on the season and ability to play multiple defensive positions makes for a quality bench piece.
Not much has gone right for Atlanta in 2025, but the rise of the rookies is one positive storyline to takeaway from this season. Baldwin looks to be a core piece for the future, and Hurston Waldrep has pitched himself into a viable rotation option for 2026. Nacho probably won’t play himself into a role as significant as Baldwin or Waldrep, but contending teams always need depth.
Braves fans know by now how quickly a team’s depth is tested, and having guys capable of playing winning baseball for a few weeks like Nacho Alvarez Jr. is something that can’t be overlooked. Hopefully Alex Anthopoulos can round out a solid bench group this winter, but an appetizer of Nacho(s) is never a bad place to start.
