Jauan Jennings injury update: Will 49ers WR play vs. Cardinals?

Another week brings another question mark in the San Francisco 49ers receiving corps.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings dealt with a calf injury that plagued him in OTAs and training camp, and while the calf injury appears to be behind him, he’s now struggling through other injury problems in the regular season.

Jennings is carrying two separate issues into the San Francisco 49ers’ matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. Here’s where things stand on him entering Week 3:

Jauan Jennings injury update

It’s been a tough start to the year for Jennings. He hurt his shoulder in the third quarter of Week 1 and didn’t return to the game. He played in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints after being listed as questionable with only one practice during the week. In that game he hurt his ankle which landed him on the injury report again for Week 3 with a bleaker outlook than in Week 2.

Will Jauan Jennings play vs. the Arizona Cardinals?

Jennings is officially questionable. One notable change from Week 2, however, is that Jennings got no practice. He was a non-participant all three days which raises more question marks than it would’ve had he practiced Friday like he did last week.

What Kyle Shanahan said about Jauan Jennings’s injury update

Shanahan wasn’t asked about Jennings at all during the week. In his Monday conference call he said Jennings hurt his ankle and would be evaluated throughout the week. That was as substantial as Shanahan went on details for the receiver’s injury.

Who will start for the 49ers if Jauan Jennings is out vs. the Cardinals?

All signs point to Kendrick Bourne playing a bigger role if Jennings can’t play. Bourne, despite signing ahead of Week 2, is the 49ers No. 3 WR with three catches for 32 yards. Aside from Jennings and WR Ricky Pearsall, Bourne is the only 49ers WR with a catch this season. The only other WR with a target is veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling who didn’t catch the lone pass thrown his way.
