The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday announced their roster moves for Week 3 and gave a possible indication on the statuses of quarterback Brock Purdy and wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
Purdy and Jennings are both questionable for Week 3 with injuries and the roster moves may have given us a good idea of what the plan is for both players in the home opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

The 49ers elevated quarterback Adrian Martinez and wide receiver Malik Turner for Week 3. It’s the second week in a row the 49ers elevated Martinez, who was the QB2 in Week 2 when Mac Jones started. This week may be different though as Purdy tries to return early from his toe injury.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday said there’s a possibility Purdy is the QB2 or emergency QB3. Martinez joining the club as a standard elevation means Purdy can’t be the emergency third QB according to Shanahan. Since Martinez wasn’t promoted to the active roster, Purdy has to either start or be QB2 with Martinez working in as the third QB who’ll be inactive, but in uniform if both the starting QB and backup QB get hurt.
Since it’s “highly unlikely” Purdy starts, the 49ers may be planning to make him the backup QB and crossing their fingers that Jones doesn’t get hurt as the starter. It’s an interesting strategy if the 49ers plan to do it that way since Purdy could wind up playing a majority of the snaps even though he didn’t start. Typically teams either play their starters or rule them out. Using Purdy as a backup would be a pretty abnormal way to combat a QB injury.
Turner’s elevation could mean the 49ers aren’t confident Jennings will be good to go. The 49ers have Ricky Pearsall, Kendrick Bourne, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Skyy Moore in their receiving corps. Adding Turner to the group gives them veteran depth and a quality special teams contributor.

The 49ers also placed reserve offensive tackle Spencer Burford on IR. He hurt his knee in Week 2, and will now miss at least four weeks as he recovers from that injury. Austen Pleasants figures to be the swing tackle. The 49ers didn’t make any other moves on the OL, which is a good sign for new starting left guard Connor Colby who is questionable with a groin injury. If Colby can’t go, undrafted rookie Drew Moss figures to be the starter at the LG spot.
