The Philadelphia Phillies announced weeks ago that they are looking to shake off the ending of 2024 and regroup with a better version of themselves in 2025.
Phillies managing partner John Middleton is not shy about where he expects the team to be but also understands it’s a hard game and you can’t pop champagne every year. Middleton and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski want the same thing: a team to bring home a World Series title.
Middleton also announced increasing the payroll past the third luxury tax tier of $281 million was a possibility. The Philadelphia Phillies front office also seems to be waiting to pull the trigger on the trade market to bring in some talent.
Phillies Rumors: MLB insider links Alec Bohm trade to a Mariners team with exciting arms
FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray appeared on the Foul Territory podcast recently and explored the idea of Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm being shipped. One place Murray contemplated was a trade to the Seattle Mariners.
The Phillies will still look to keep the main core of the lineup they have signed long-term with Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber. They could trade Bohm to round out the pitching staff while also filling in at third base internally if need be.
“They [the Phillies] are going to keep that core, that really strong high-end core, but I think after that almost anyone is going to end up being available, and Bohm is going to end up fitting in that category,” Murray said.
“I do think Bohm makes a lot of sense for Seattle,” Murray said. “It wouldn’t break the bank at all. It’ll take a little bit to get him because he’s a really good young player, but the Phillies really want to kind of shake things up a little bit.”
Bohm might not be the biggest name on the market, but he has created a name for himself and was able to produce in the middle of a loaded Phillies lineup. Bohm would be a very attractive option for the Mariners, and without their star Julio Rodriguez performing much at all in 2024, the Mariners’ offense was anemic. The Mariners finished 29th in team batting average at .224 and led all of baseball in strikeouts with 1,625.
“They [Seattle] are really happy with where their outfield is, but they really want to improve the infield, and if you can get a Bohm type, if you can end up getting another player as well, that can really elevate the offense,” Murray said.
The Mariners could greatly benefit from a player like Bohm in a deal that could include some depth for the Phillies. Reports are that the Phillies are shopping for a pitcher. The Phillies could look to the young stars of Bryan Woo and Bryce Miller. Per Spotrac, the appeal of any pitcher in the Mariners organization is there, especially with both pitching to a sub-3.00 ERA in arbitration.
Lots of teams could be in the running for Bohm’s services as his skill set could very well attract many suitors this winter.
“I can’t imagine the Mariners would be alone in that race at all for Bohm,” Murray said. “There’s going to be plenty of different teams that are going to be involved in that, but to me, that makes a lot of sense.”
