Stephen & Jerry Jones Tease Potential Trade to Improve Cowboys Defense

The Dallas Cowboys have been a drama-filled organization in the NFL ever since Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989. It has been a non-stop rollercoaster of storylines, rumors and a combination of disgruntled players and coaches.

This past NFL offseason was the perfect example of what a circus the Cowboys can be when it comes to being in the headlines on a daily basis, with the Micah Parsons saga being all anyone could talk about. Ultimately, the standoff between Jones and the superstar linebacker ended in a blockbuster trade to the Green Bay Packers, which sent shockwaves throughout the league and the world of professional sports.

The shocking trade rivaled a deal that occurred in the NBA earlier this year, when the Dallas Mavericks unexpectedly traded superstar guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for fellow superstar Anthony Davis. The city of Dallas and its diehard sports fans still can’t wrap their heads around either trade.

Cowboys’ Jerry Jones is at it Again

After only two games to start the 2025 NFL season, Jones and company are at it again, stirring the pot by teasing another potential trade to, believe it or not, upgrade the defensive side of the football.

During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan via Jon Machota of The Athletic, Jones started fanning the flames once again with trade speculation surrounding the Cowboys franchise.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on @1053thefan on if they’re open to adding defensive help via trade: “Absolutely, I’m open for business period relative now that we have those extra picks. We should be.”

“Absolutely, I’m open for business period relative now that we have those extra picks,” Jones said. “We should be.”

After giving up 61 points collectively across the first two games of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, the Cowboys should definitely be looking to upgrade their defense. So, Jones isn’t wrong in this situation, as they should be working the phones.

The problem, as Cowboys fans will point out, is that they just gave up a generational talent at linebacker to a team that now looks like a Super Bowl title contender in the NFC and might remain so for many years to come.

Jones and the front office created this problem on defense by not being willing to pay Parsons’ asking price, which the rest of the teams in the league would’ve been more than willing to do. It’s essentially a self-inflicted wound, which they now have to address.

Cowboys Brass on the Same Page About Wheeling and Dealing

Stephen Jones, son of Jerry and executive vice president of the Cowboys, also went on 105.3 The Fan and talked about what his father said about being “open for business” earlier in the day.

“I think you are always open to any opportunity, whether you have extra (draft picks) or not,” Stephen Jones said. … “Any time the right opportunity presents itself, then we’re open to it.

“I’m not privy to what he said. I don’t think I heard his interview, but I would be for it and for looking at something that gave us a chance to not only make us a much better team this year but make us better for the future.”

The whole family seems to be on board with the Cowboys making another trade, so there might be some fireworks set to go off here soon, or this might be hot air to get Dallas back in the headlines again, which wouldn’t be all that surprising.
