Brett Wisely takes fielding practice prior to a Giants game against the Braves on July 22, 2025.
On Thursday September 18, 2025, the Atlanta Braves announced that they have claimed former San Francisco Giants utility IF/OF Brett Wisely off waivers from the Giants.
The #Braves today claimed INF Brett Wisely off waivers from the San Francisco Giants and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred LHP Aaron Bummer to the 60-day injured list.

The Braves are optioning Wisely, 26, to AAA Gwinnett.
Wisely was designated for assignment by the Giants on Monday September 15, 2025 to make room for top Giants prospect Bryce Eldridge on the 40-man roster. The Giants called up Eldridge to make his MLB debut Monday after starting first baseman Dominic Smith hit the injured list with a hamstring strain.
Wisley was developed as a shortstop, but has played first base, second base, third base, shortstop, designated hitter, center field and even pitcher for the Giants in his career. He has also been used as a pinch hitter and pinch runner.
His versatility, good defense, solid bat and youth are likely the reasons the Braves snagged him off waivers. He has plenty of potential and physical prime left to have a solid career in the Atlanta organization.
Remembering Wisely’s Career With the Giants
Brett Wisely didn’t have a very long career with the Giants. He only appeared in 164 games, the equivalent of one full season’s slate, over three years from 2023-25.
But Giants fans still have plenty of fond memories of watching Wisley in the Orange and Black.
In those 164 games, Wisely hit .217 with 7 home runs and 49 RBI. He also had 5 stolen bases.
His best season was 2024, when he appeared in 91 games and hit .238 with 4 home runs and 31 RBI.
The most memorable moment of his Giants career was a walk-off two-run home run off of Los Angeles Dodgers closer Blake Treinen on June 28, 2024 to give the Giants a 5-3 win against the Dodgers.
Wisely essentially became expendable after the Giants added Willy Adames to become the full time shortstop, Casey Schmitt emerged as the starting second baseman and Christian Koss took Wisley’s ideal role as the utility infield bench bat.
But he will likely bring plenty of value to the Braves, or whatever MLB team he breaks through with next.
The State Of The Giants’ Infield Depth
The Giants’ organizational infield depth certainly took a hit with the departure of Wisely. But it also may have cleared up their plans for the future.
Adames, Eldridge, Schmitt, Koss and Matt Chapman are locks to be on the roster next season. Rafael Devers, who plays at first base on occasion, will also be around. Wilmer Flores and Smith will be free agents. The Giants will probably bring one of them back, but not both.
The only other Giants infielder on the 40 man roster is Tyler Fitzgerald, who is currently in AAA Sacramento.
The Giants really don’t have any other top infield prospects or guys at AAA Sacramento either. Their best infield prospects are in the lower levels of the system.
So next year, fans can almost certainly expect Chapman, Adames and Schmitt to start. Eldridge will probably platoon with Devers and Smith or Flores (but not all three) to start the season. And Koss will be the superutility guy, with Fitzgerald ready to come up from AAA Sacramento if anyone gets injured.
Unless the Giants sign a free agent that no one is expecting.
Giants fans, what is your favorite memory of Brett Wisely with San Francisco? How do you feel about the infield moving forward?
