Brock Purdy says he’s trying to be smart with his body; likely a game time decision for Week 3

A host of San Francisco 49ers returned to practice on Thursday after not participating on Wednesday:

RB Christian McCaffrey
DE Nick Bosa
DL Yetur Gross-Matos
FB Kyle Juszczyk (blue no contact jersey)
DB Siran Neal (blue no contact jersey)

Juszczyk and Neal were in the concussion protocol, while McCaffrey and Bosa had veteran days off.

According to other media members on hand, Jauan Jennings was not present with the wide receiver group. Jennings has been dealing with an ankle and shoulder injury. Left tackle Trent Williams was working off to the side.

Quarterback Brock Purdy was present during the media’s availability. During an earlier appearance on KNBR, general manager John Lynch said it was a good sign that Purdy is practicing, but it’s all about how his body responds:

“It was encouraging to see him practice. He was limited yesterday. He got out there and had some activity. Everyone saw that. The key now is: how does he respond to that? We’ll find that out later today to see if he can get back out there.”

Purdy taking drops and throwing is a positive development:

It’s a sign that even if he misses Week 3, he could return sooner rather than later.

The participant’s report doesn’t come out until after practice. We’ll provide further updates then.

Kyle’s update, 4:00 p.m. PT: Mac Jones spoke at the podium, which is usually reserved for the starting quarterback. However, Brock Purdy followed him. Pudy was asked if he felt like he was playing this weekend at the podium on Thursday afternoon:

Definitely gotta see come game time how I feel. Obviously, I wanna play every game dude. I wanna be out there. We only get 17 regular season games. Every game matters, especially a divisional, going against the Cardinals. If you ask me, I’d love to. I’m trying to be smart with my body here. You never know, we’ll see when the game comes

Purdy was officially listed as limited during Thursday’s practice, as was Trent Williams, Kyle Juszczyk, Yetur Gross-Matos, and Jordan Watkins, who was not on Wednesday’s injury report. Jauan Jennings and Spencer Burford were the only two players who did not participate.
