The New York Yankees are nearly done with their grueling 162-game travel schedule, but it’s getting particularly rough at the end.
Already exhausted upon arriving in Minneapolis at the crack of dawn on Monday for this week’s three-game series with the Minnesota Twins, the Yankees had to play three straight night games, then immediately head east for this weekend’s four-game road series with the Baltimore Orioles.
According to a report from Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, the Yankees chose to fly to Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., and drive 80 miles to Baltimore after Wednesday night’s game, because of scheduled runway closures at the Baltimore/Washington International Airport.
In addition, Kuty reported that one Yankees official slammed the Twins for mandating a night game for the Yankees on a getaway day so late in the regular season.
“Major League Baseball cleared the Yankees to fly directly into Baltimore early Thursday, but Yankees players preferred to arrive in the city as soon as possible, according to a team source with knowledge of the situation,” wrote Kuty. “‘Absurd’ was how one prominent member of the Yankees described the Twins’ decision to schedule a night game Wednesday, with the team needing to play in Baltimore the following night.”
Manager Aaron Boone wasn’t making excuses for his team after securing a 10-5 win on Wednesday night to secure a 5-1 record in the season series with the fourth-place Twins.
“It is what it is,” Boone said, per Kuty. “Everyone has to deal with it in some way, shape or form, but the bottom line is we have to go out there and perform regardless of what a getaway day looks like.”
The Yankees looked lifeless on Monday after their late-night travel from Boston, but bounced back to take the last two games from the Twins. It will be interesting to see if they can avoid a similar flat start on Thursday against a Baltimore team playing significantly better down the stretch.
