he New York Yankees need to make some big moves in the offseason, especially as Cody Bellinger heads into the open market again.

New York could use help across the board, but the infield and the pitching staff are likely the two biggest holes on the roster.

Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy recently urged the Yankees to pursue Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman in free agency if he’s available. Bregman has an opt-out clause in his contract, which he’s expected to use at the end of the season.

“Bregman isn’t guaranteed to be available this offseason. He has an opt-out in his three-year deal with Boston that has been talked about a lot. Third base has been a spot of need for the Yankees, and Bregman will be the best player available, if he does opt out,” McAvoy wrote. “The Yankees have gotten a good look at him over the years with the Houston Astros and now Boston. He’s a superstar who would give the Yankees something they are clearly missing.”

Bregman would be a huge addition for the Yankees to make. Signing him would give New York another superstar in the middle of the lineup, and it would pluck the best player from the Red Sox’s roster.

But it’s unlikely.

First of all, the Yankees didn’t go after Bregman last offseason when the hole in the infield was bigger than it is now. Secondly, it seems quite unlikely that Boston would lose a bidding war with New York for one of its biggest superstars.

The Yankees are more likely to go after a player like Kyle Tucker or the aforementioned Bellinger rather than Bregman. Still, he’s not out of the Yankees’ price range, so it can’t be considered off the table.
