Aaron Boone’s latest Anthony Volpe comments won’t make Yankees fans happy

Aaron Boone’s latest Anthony Volpe comments won’t make Yankees fans happy originally appeared on The Sporting News

It was reported that New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe received a cortisone shot ahead of Tuesday’s game, allowing him to return to the lineup.

Volpe has had his worst year as a professional on both sides of the baseball, something the organization is hoping that could change with this cortisone shot.

It’s evident that Volpe is struggling in ways he never has, but his defensive problems are a bit concerning for a team looking to win a World Series.

Factor that in with his .206 batting average and 140 strikeouts, and Volpe hasn’t exactly done anything on the diamond to suggest that he should still be playing every single game.

However, according to Aaron Boone, the Yankees skipper, that might be the plan moving forward. He said that Jose Caballero isn’t an everyday player, something that many Yankee fans won’t want to hear.

“He’s ready to go,” Boone said before Tuesday’s game at Target Field, per Greg Joyce of The NY Post. “And also, Caballero’s not a guy that plays every single day and I want to be mindful of that, as he’s a little beat up too. I want to get Anthony back into the mix here and hopefully give us a spark today.”

Boone later added that Volpe thinks that he’s in a good place physically, which is one positive.

“I feel like he’s in a good place physically,” Boone said. “But that being said, I feel like that’s been the case most of the year. He’s just got to focus on what he does at the plate and put himself in a position to make good swing decisions. Hopefully it’ll click for him right away.”

While this move might be criticized if the Yankees allow Volpe to play instead of Caballero, it’s ultimately something Boone will have to decide on.

The Yankees are in a position to win a World Series if they play their best baseball, but Volpe simply hasn’t done that for much of the year.
