Let’s Argue: Chiefs fans underappreciate Isiah Pacheco

In our “Let’s Argue” series, our Mark Gunnels considers the hot takes, wacky predictions and unpopular opinions of Kansas City Chiefs fans from all over the world.

Isiah Pacheco should the Chiefs’ clear RB1

I think two things can be true.

The Chiefs have one of the weakest running back rooms in the league. In the same breath, that doesn’t mean they can’t be productive. When you have a quarterback as good as Patrick Mahomes, defenses have to respect his ability to make plays all over the field.

In the game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes led the team in rushing. That’s not the kind of world you want to live in.

To Isiah Pacheco’s credit, the Rutgers product did average five yards per carry in Week 1. The problem is, he only had five carries.

I fully expect Pacheco to see more than five carries against the Eagles.

Patrick Mahomes needs to become the league’s best quarterback again

The quarterback discourse has become exhausting.

Over the last two seasons, Mahomes’ raw statistics haven’t been the best. That said, he still led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl both years. Two seasons ago, Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore were getting significant snaps. Last year, the wide receiver room was riddled with injuries. It also didn’t help that there was a revolving door at left tackle.

Fast-forward to now, and the Chiefs are once again dealing with adversity at receiver. Rice is suspended, and now Xavier Worthy is nursing a shoulder injury. Thankfully, it appears Worthy escaped with the best-case scenario.

It also feels like the Chiefs may have solved the issue at left tackle with Josh Simmons, but time will tell.

Despite the roadblocks, Mahomes has shown the ability to carry this team — as he did just last week in Brazil. I expect more of that as the season progresses.

The Chiefs’ dynasty is over

Here’s another tired, lazy take.

I get it. Everyone is sick of the Chiefs’ success — and that’s understandable. But there isn’t a tangible argument to support the idea that the dynasty is over. You can hope and wish it’s done all you want, but there’s nothing to suggest that right now.

Most of the key pieces from last year are back, and in theory, the offense should be much better if they can ever get their top three receivers on the field at the same time.

It’s time for the Chiefs to get a new offensive coordinator

This is a very popular opinion in the Kingdom.

I understand the frustrations with Matt Nagy.

But here’s the thing: no matter who the offensive coordinator is, as long as Andy Reid is the head coach, it’s always going to be his offense. That’s not to say Nagy doesn’t have a voice or influence, but it’s unclear how much.

The Chiefs just need to get healthy and execute.

It’s really that simple.
