REPORT: Brewers’ “El Espectculo” Returns to Wow Fans!!

MILWAUKEE — Brewers fans, buckle up because Ernesto Martinez Jr. is about to bring a whole lot of excitement to Spring Training. Picture this: a towering 6-foot-6 prospect who can launch home runs and then make jaw-dropping splits at first base. That’s right, the Brewers’ freshly re-signed prospect, dubbed “The Cuban Missile,” is gearing up for a whirlwind introduction at the big league camp.

Now, let’s dive into what makes Martinez more than just a player to watch. Re-signing him on a Minor League deal with an invite to Spring Training might not come with guarantees, but recent history shows the Brewers’ knack for finding diamonds in the rough.

Just think of the unexpected rise of Tobias Myers and Jared Koenig in 2024, both who turned their non-roster invites into major MLB accolades. Myers’ stunning 3.00 ERA over 138 innings and Koenig’s impressive 2.47 ERA with 55 appearances come to mind as prime examples.

Not to forget, Colin Rea, a 2023 invitee who clocked in an astounding 292 1/3 Major League innings, exemplifies how these under-the-radar signings can turn into major team assets.

This brings us to Martinez—an electrifying presence on the field with an .831 OPS from his time at Double-A Biloxi. His size is imposing, and yet his athleticism is what truly sets him apart.

Brewers’ assistant director of player development, Brenton Del Chiaro, couldn’t contain his admiration, expressing how thrilling it is to watch Martinez perform. “El espectáculo,” or “The Show,” as he’s affectionately nicknamed, captures the essence of his dynamic play style.

Martinez carries a diverse background, beginning his baseball journey in Holguin, Cuba, where he represented Team Cuba during the 2014 U-15 World Championship. His path led him from France, where his father played professionally, to the Dominican Republic where he trained under former Major League player Fernando Tatis. In 2017, the Brewers saw his potential and signed him for $800,000, initiating what would become an exponential upward trajectory for the young athlete.

His 2023 season at Biloxi was nothing short of spectacular, featuring a .284/.365/.466 slash line with 30 doubles, 13 home runs, and a notable 20 stolen bases across a career-high 110 games. These stats, paired with his reduced strikeout rate of 77 in 457 plate appearances, make Martinez an intriguing prospect. Perhaps most eye-catching is his standout offensive impact, characterized by leading the Southern League with an average exit velocity of 109 mph, a figure that puts him on the Statcast map as a powerful force.

Further adding to his legend, Martinez maxes out the Blast Motion bat sensor, pushing its limits with his explosive bat speed. As Del Chiaro put it, “He just continues to impact the baseball.”

Beyond just his remarkable stats, Martinez is described as a lively, spirited presence who truly enjoys every minute at the ballpark. Whether he’s sending baseballs soaring over the fence, stealing multiple bases, or showcasing his acrobatic flexibility, visitors to the field can expect a show from Martinez.

So, as the Brewers gear up for Spring Training, keep an eye on “The Cuban Missile.” If his past is any indication, he’s about to bring some fireworks—and plenty of excitement—to Milwaukee.
