Red Sox pitching prospect Luis Perales hit 98-100 mph with his fastball on Saturday in his first outing since undergoing Tommy John surgery in June 2024.

The 22-year-old, who’s on Boston’s 40-man roster, started for Double-A Portland. He tossed one scoreless inning and pitched around a walk. He threw 16 pitches, eight for strikes.

Perales began the 2025 season ranked as Boston’s No. 1 pitching prospect, but Baseball America now has him ranked behind pitchers Payton Tolle, 2025 first-round pick Kyson Witherspoon, Connelly Early and Brandon Clarke. Overall, he is the Red Sox’ No. 8 prospect, according to Baseball America.

Perales underwent the elbow procedure June 27, 2024, after a strong start to the 2024 season. He posted a 2.94 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 56 strikeouts and 12 walks in nine starts (33 ⅔ innings) between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland before leaving a start on June 8 due to elbow inflammation.

He will pitch in the Arizona Fall League when AFL play begins on Oct. 6.
