Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney was fined $11,593 by the NFL after being flagged for taunting during Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season.
McKinney, a 2024 first-team All-Pro, was penalized during the second quarter of the Packers’ 27-13 win over the Detroit Lions to start the season. On the play in question, McKinney knocked down Lions receiver Kaliff Raymond and then briefly stood over the player while he was getting up from the ground. The NFL has put an emphasis on sportsmanship and taunting-related penalties to open the 2025 season, including “standing over your opponent.” McKinney was one of five players across the league fined for taunting in Week 1.

Here’s the play:
The Lions had three players fined in Week 1. Brian Branch was fined for both a facemask and unsportsmanlike conduct/taunting after ripping off Tucker Kraft’s helmet and throwing the helmet in the first quarter. He was penalized 15 yards. Jameson Williams was fined for taunting on a play in which he was not flagged. The Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles were the only teams to receive three different fines in Week 1.
The league is posting all fined penalties and actions from the previous week on Saturdays this season.
From the NFL: “Players subject to accountability measures receive a letter informing them of what they did, a video of the play in question, why they are being fined and how much it will cost them. They also receive information on how to appeal the fine. If they choose not to appeal, the fine is withheld from their next game check.”

All appeals are handled appeals officers Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson, three former players appointed by the NFL and NFLPA. Fines are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation.
