Eagles roster news: 3 moves announced ahead of Chiefs game

The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced three roster moves ahead of their Week 2 road game against the Kansas City Chiefs. An overview:

  • OT Cameron Williams was placed on injured reserve.
  • TE Cameron Latu and S Marcus Epps were temporarily elevated from the practice squad.

Note: teams can temporarily elevate two practice squad players per week up to three times each in the regular season and an unlimited number of times in the postseason.

Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.

Williams making the Eagles’ 53-man roster out of training camp was surprising since he didn’t play well. There was thought that the Birds would look to stash the 21-year-old rookie offensive tackle on injured reserve. And that’s exactly what the team is doing here … just a little later than originally expected. Williams purportedly suffered a shoulder injury in practice this week. By placing him on IR, the Eagles opened up a roster spot that they won’t fill prior to this Chiefs game.

With Dallas Goedert ruled out due to a knee injury, the Eagles are temporarily elevating Cameron Latu to be the third tight end behind Grant Calcaterra and Kylen Granson. Latu shined on special teams during the Eagles’ preseason games and offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo mentioned him as a potential fullback option. Notable that Latu was elevated over fellow practice squad tight end E.J. Jenkins. (FYI: Latu is wearing No. 36.)

The Eagles previously elevated Epps to the game day roster in Week 1 to have a fourth safety behind Reed Blankenship, Andrew Mukuba, and Sydney Brown. Epps now only has one more elevation for the rest of this season, so, the Eagles might sign him to the roster with the spot left behind by Williams going on IR.
