The Red Sox face a lot of questions going into the offseason including whether Alex Bregman will opt out of his contract.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported last week that that he believes the third baseman will opt out of his deal and become a free agent, “barring an injury or catastrophic slump.”
Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy said on WEEI on Thursday that he was surprised by the report because there have been no discussions with Bregman.
“He wants to be here, we want him to be here, and I’ll leave it at that,” Kennedy said. “He’s such an important part of this season and what we’re doing.”
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox in February. It included opt outs after the first two seasons. The veteran infielder is batting .281 with 16 home runs and 54 RBI and has become a leader in the clubhouse.
The 31-year-old said he’s open to discussing an extension with Boston in the offseason, but didn’t want to have those talks in-season.
“I’m just focused on trying to do what I can to help this team win and get into the playoffs,” Bregman told The Boston Globe. “I feel like that’s where my head and mind need to be.”
