The San Francisco 49ers have official word on quarterback Brock Purdy’s status for Week 2.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Thursday joined KNBR in San Francisco and had a not-so-good short-term update on Purdy’s availability for Sunday in New Orleans. Shanahan said Purdy will not play in the team’s Week 2 game. The team will make it official after Friday’s practice when they release an injury report for Sunday.

That’s in line with his previous update that Purdy was a “long shot” to suit up against New Orleans. It’s also in line with reporting from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport that Purdy could miss two-to-six weeks.
While Shanahan was definitive on Purdy’s status for Week 2, he left the door open for a return in Week 3 when the 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals in their home opener.
“There’s still a chance he could miss next game,” Shanahan said. “We’re not sure. We’ll see how the toe heals. It’s kind of week-to-week right now, but he’s getting better. Had a good rehab day today and hopefully we’ll have some better luck next week.”
Purdy injured his toe on a second quarter scramble against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. He finished the game, but his injury is bad enough that it kept him out for all of Week 2 and potentially beyond. The 49ers would love to get some good luck on the injury front eventually and have Purdy’s absence only last for a week. All signs point that being a long shot at this point, though, even if Shanahan isn’t ruling it out.
