Following his announcement, the Yankees took to social media to congratulate the fan favorite first baseman on his retirement.

“A spectacular career & a legacy that expands beyond the game,” the Yankees posted on X. “Congratulations on your retirement, Rizzo.”

Rizzo was seen at Yankee stadium as soon as Tuesday night for the Yankees’ matchup with the Detroit Tigers, and has now decided to call it a career the following day.

Rizzo was productive during his time with the Yankees

Rizzo was traded from the Chicago Cubs to the Yankees at the 2021 trade deadline, and had an immediate impact during his time with the team. In his first full season as a Yankee in 2022, Rizzo slashed .224/.338/.480 with 32 home runs and 75 RBIs.

However, following that strong 2022 season, Rizzo experienced a dramatic fall off in production thanks to an undiagnosed concussion early in the 2023 season. For months, Rizzo played with a concussion, and his production tapered off considerably, hitting .237 with 20 home runs, and 76 RBIs in 191 games in the final two seasons of his career.

Nonetheless, Rizzo will forever remain a fan favorite to Yankees fans, and his time with the team will always be remembered positively despite a disappointing ending.
