The New England Patriots are moving on from one of their training camp standouts.
The Patriots waived cornerback D.J. James on Tuesday, a source confirmed to MassLive’s Mark Daniels.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was first to report the news.
James was one of New England’s stars during training camp. The cornerback took first-team reps this summer when the Patriots were forced to dig into their cornerback depth due to injuries.
A 2024 sixth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks, James signed with the Patriots practice squad last year. He didn’t appear in any games in 2024, but made his New England debut in its Week 1 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. The 24-year-old played two defensive snaps and five special teams snaps and had one tackle.
Cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Alex Austin played every defensive snap for the Patriots last week, while Marcus Jones also saw action.
It’s unclear if the move signifies an imminent return for Christian Gonzalez — who’s been dealing with a hamstring injury suffered in training camp that kept him out of the preseason and Week 1 — or if the Patriots could elevate Corey Ballentine from their practice squad.
