Red Sox Lineup Shake-Up Boston will have a new right fielder on Friday, while Jarren Duran is set to hit leadoff vs. a lefty for the first time since June. 👀 It’s a notable lineup shift as the Sox look to spark their offense heading into a key stretch.

PHOENIX — For the first time since June 8, Jarren Duran is leading off for the Red Sox against a left-handed starter Friday night in Arizona.

Duran — who was unplugged from the leadoff spot against lefties in mid-June and then displaced in the No. 1 hole by Roman Anthony against righties in late July — will return to a familiar lineup spot against old friend Eduardo Rodríguez on Friday night.

Rodríguez, in his second year with Arizona, has reverse splits this season, explaining Duran’s placement in the leadoff spot. Lefties have hit .349 with a .922 OPS off Rodríguez this year; righties have tagged him at a .283 average and .828 OPS.

With Anthony (oblique strain) expected to be out 4-6 weeks, manager Alex Cora will use different-looking lineups down the stretch. In Anthony’s absence, expect Duran to be the everyday leadoff man against righties with others mixing in against left-handed pitchers with normal splits.

“It’s Eduardo,” said Cora. “With Eddie, we feel comfortable. With the lefties, we’ll see. With the righties, most likely, it’s going to be Jarren every day.”

Friday’s order has second baseman Romy Gonzalez in the cleanup spot, designated hitter Rob Refsnyder hitting fifth and first baseman Nathaniel Lowe hitting sixth. Nate Eaton is the right fielder in Anthony’s place and will hit seventh. It’s Eaton’s first start in right in the big leagues this season. The utility man, who is 9-for-32 with two doubles against lefties this season, logged 132 ⅔ innings over 18 games in right field for Triple-A Worcester.

On the mound is Payton Tolle, making his second career big league start after a dazzling debut last Friday against the Pirates. The rookie lefty is expected to be available for 85-90 pitches with Boston’s bullpen well-rested after an off day Thursday.

The Red Sox will make a roster move before the game, placing reliever Jordan Hicks (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list and recalling Chris Murphy from Triple-A. Boston enters Friday in possession of the second wild card spot in the American League, a half-game behind the Yankees, who start a key three-game series against the Blue Jays at 7:05 p.m. Boston trails Toronto by 3 œ games in the American League East race.

First pitch from Chase Field is at 9:40 p.m. ET.
