The Atlanta Braves made a series of moves on Thursday that have raised eyebrows of a frustrated fan base. It is hard to surprise a group of fans that went from an expected World Series contender to out of postseason contention after the All-Star Break. What has been a tough season can no longer offer many surprises, with Thursday’s moves providing an exception. Jurickson Profar has been reinstated from the paternity list, and Ha-Seong Kim joined Atlanta’s roster.

Profar’s expected return created a difficult decision that the Braves answered by designating Luke Williams for assignment and releasing Cal Quantrill.

Daysbel Hernández was again returned to the active roster, and Wander Suero was claimed off waivers by the Mets. It continues an endless shuffle of failing pieces that are attempting to get the Braves through the final month of the season. However, in the midst of this was the surprising demotion of Williams.

If this were two months ago, the demotion of Williams wouldn’t have come as even a bit of a surprise. However, the infielder has proven to be an incredible option when it comes to helping the Braves get through a lost season. He remains an offensive liability, hitting only .133 in limited at-bats. What the veteran brings to the roster is the ability to fill in at nearly every position and eat innings in blowouts.

Something that he has done more than once and often been better than Atlanta’s dollar store bullpen. While this isn’t much of an accomplishment, it seemed enough to earn him a spot on the roster in the season’s final month. The Braves owed it to a player who has done anything asked of him to allow Williams to at least finish out the season. Replacing the limited hitter only makes sense when you’re making a push to contend.

Yes, Kim provides more upside and is going to help you offensively. However, the goal isn’t to win games at this point, with the focus shifting to evaluating your pieces and attempting to find a path forward to building out a 2026 contender. Williams isn’t going to be a part of this, but he made sense as a pitching and defensive replacement option for the rest of the season.

Williams being designated for assignment doesn’t mean that his time with Atlanta has for sure come to an end. The infielder will have to decide whether to accept the demotion or opt to hit free agency and see if any other roster is willing to take a chance on him in the final weeks of the season.

For Hernandez, this is yet another return to the active roster that is sure to be followed by moments of brilliance, only to forget how to throw strikes in a key moment. It serves as yet another reminder of a cheap ownership group and a failing front office that has had an entire season to rebuild the bullpen and still has zero idea of where to look.

Atlanta fans can only hope that the last month ends with some reason to believe the Braves are turning a corner heading into 2026. Regardless, the roster continues to be mismanaged and needs massive work as the offseason nears.
