Former Chicago Cubs star Anthony Rizzo helped the Cubs end their World Series drought in 2016, playing a big role in the team winning its first World Series title since 1908 that year.
Unfortunately for Rizzo, he nearly lost his World Series ring to commemorate that season in the bottom of a lake.
Chicago scuba diver Yohei Yamada recently spoke with Block Club Chicago about some of the more memorable times he has been called upon to save the day.
One of those times involved Anthony Rizzo, who lost his World Series ring in the bottom of Lake Michigan.
“Rizzo had lost weight and washed his hands in his boat. He shook them dry, and the ring flew off,” Yamada said. “Somebody gave him my number.”
Rizzo called up Yamada, who said that he was happy to help out.
The MLB veteran provided several generous tips to the diver, according to Block Club Chicago, including a few $100 bills.
The fact that Yamada found the World Series ring is even more impressive considering the fact that “rings are the hardest to fine,” Yamada told Block Club Chicago.
Anthony Rizzo hit .292 with 32 home runs and 109 RBIs during the 2016 season with the Cubs. He was the starting first baseman for the National League in the MLB All-Star game that year.
For his career, Rizzo spent 14 seasons playing Major League Baseball, hitting .261 with 303 home runs and 965 RBIs over the course of that time. Rizzo has not officially retired yet, but it seems as though he may be headed that way.
The Florida native topped the 30-home run club five times in his career, with four of those coming during his time in Chicago.
He most recently competed with the Yankees in 2024, hitting .228 with 8 homes runs and 35 RBIs in 92 games.
