This last-minute Patriots trade now feels possible after Micah Parsons stunner

New England Patriots v Las Vegas Raiders

The New England Patriots have entered a completely new era under the leadership of Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf. As such, a good portion of the roster was turned over this offseason as the new regime got rid of the stink from decision-makers past.

Not every issue can be solved in one offseason, however. Despite giving veteran wideout Stefon Diggs a three-year deal worth up to $69 million, the Patriots could still use another top-flight pass-catcher to help out Drake Maye and the offense.

New England was seemingly a frontrunner for both Washington Commanders star wideout Terry McLaurin and Green Bay Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons. However, now that both of these players’ contract situations have been settled, the Patriots have the money to make another move.

Patriots could trade for Jakobi Meyers to sew up wide receiver room

Last week, Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers requested a trade. The new regime in Las Vegas has not granted him an extension despite him recording a career-best 1,027 receiving yards last season and being in the final year of his contract.

Meyers is an obvious trade candidate for the Patriots for several reasons. One, as mentioned, the team needs wide receiver help thanks to a smattering of injuries and players underperforming this preseason.

The Patriots were also the first team to take a chance on Meyers coming out of college, and the undrafted player from the 2019 NFL Draft ended up spending four years in New England. He’s spent the last three with the Raiders, but could be on the move again.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels brought Meyers to Las Vegas when he was the Raiders’ head coach. But now that he is back with the Patriots, it should not shock anyone to see these two wanting to reunite once again.

New England also has a league-best $53.6 million in cap space available in 2025, and they have a solid amount over the coming years as well. The Patriots have both the need and money to acquire Meyers, as well as the connections to make him comfortable with a change of scenery.

After missing out on both McLaurin and Parsons, this last-minute trade could easily be in the works as a nice consolation prize. Obviously, the Patriots and Raiders face off in Week 1, so a deal should not be imminent by any means.

But if New England is in the hunt for the playoffs like many expect them to be, and the Raiders become sellers at the deadline, then this deal would make sense for all the parties involved.
