Could Yankees Turn to Blue Jays’ $182M Star as Anthony Volpe Replacement?

MLB MrThanh · September 3, 2025 · Comments off

he New York Yankees entered Wednesday looming within three games of re-taking the top spot in the American League East. But the Toronto Blue Jays won’t give up their lead easily as they look to carry a second-half surge deep into the playoffs this season.

Though the Yankees are under perennial pressure to earn World Series championships, the Blue Jays are facing their own kind of make-or-break season as this could be their final shot with the superstar duo of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette on the roster.

Guerrero recently signed a $500 million extension with the team, but Bichette has the chance to become a free agent at the end of the year with a projected $182 million price tag moving forward, per Spotrac. As a result, the Blue Jays might have little choice but to let Bichette sign elsewhere. And their division rival has suddenly emerged as a potential fit.

“The Anthony Volpe experiment has sufficiently fizzled out,” Christopher Kline wrote for FanSided. “Bichette can stabilize the left side of the infield next to Ryan McMahon. Moreover, he’s a far more consistent hitter than Volpe.”

As Volpe’s Gold Glove Award rookie season has devolved into two seasons of significant steps back, the Yankees could consider an infield change this coming winter. And if they really are in the market for a new shortstop, Bichette would likely be the best available option.

“New York has the financial wherewithal, the positional need and the divisional spite necessary to commit significant resources toward Bichette,” Kline added. “It puts Bichette in primetime, with a chance to torture the Blue Jays for years to come.”

After a second All-Star campaign with the Blue Jays, Bichette saw his own step-back season last year before emerging as Major League Baseball’s hits leaders this season. There are some questions about how long he’ll be able to handle the shortstop position as he ages, but his presence would offer a clear substitute for next year if the Yankees are looking to demote or trade Volpe.

Some Yankees fans are certainly ready for that kind of move and seizing one of their division rivals’ biggest stars in the process would only add to the intrigue.
