The Boston Red Sox have been without their Gold Glove outfielder in Wilyer Abreu for a while now, and his return is still uncertain.

According to Sox manager Alex Cora, Abreu still doesn’t have a timetable to return, and when asked if people should be worried, he gave a mysterious answer.

“Slower than what we expected. He’s been able to hit and move around defensively. But he hasn’t been able to run. So are we concerned? Yes and no. He’ll be back at one point. But I think it’s been longer than expected,” Cora said (via Masslive).

Abreu has been a core part of the Red Sox, with his Gold Glove in right field, and the fact he’s slashing .253/.325/.486/.811, with 16 doubles, 69 RBI, and is tied with Trevor Story in homers with 22, which leads the team.

It’s not like the Sox need Abreu back ASAP, though. They still have three stud outfielders in Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, and Ceddanne Rafaela to start everyday. However, having a surplus of great outfielders is never a bad thing.

When Abreu does return, that just means Anthony and Duran will take more reps at DH, so all four can be included. Hopefully Abreu returns soon, as while they don’t need him, getting some reps in before the playoffs is never a bad idea.
