Ex-Orioles manager throws Mike Elias under the bus over Jackson Holliday’s promotion

The month of August seems to be the time when former Baltimore Orioles feel comfortable talking about everything that went wrong during the 2025 season.
Between Cedric Mullins wondering if the team had any leadership in the clubhouse and Charlie Morton’s sad assessment of his time in Baltimore, it feels like the writing was on the wall that former manager Brandon Hyde didn’t have control of things. Whether as a reaction to Mullins and Morton or not, Hyde has joined in on the early post-mortem of the Orioles’ 2025 season.
Hyde has kept a low profile since being fired by the Orioles earlier this season, but has returned to the media circuit and wants everyone to know he wasn’t to blame for what went wrong this season. Most telling was the fact that Hyde wasn’t shy about throwing Mike Elias’ front office under the bus when talking about Jackson Holliday.
Ex-Orioles manager calls out Mike Elias for Jackson Holliday promotion
Hyde called the promotion of Holliday last season “unfair” and all but suggested that the timing wasn’t right for his arrival.
“I think Jackson’s going to be a great player in this game,” Hyde said. “As a team that’s trying to win every single night, and every night’s the Super Bowl, people can get on the wagon and off the wagon with certain players. And sometimes it just takes a little more time.”
The comments very much feel like Hyde is washing his hands of the inconsistent start Holliday’s had at the Major League level. In theory, one would think that the manager of a team would have a say in when a top prospect was promoted to the Major League level, and further, how the top prospect is utilized once at the Major League level.
Instead, as with his thoughts on what went wrong with the Orioles this season, Hyde is taking part in the classic fired manager media tour. In other words, everyone else was to blame for everything that had gone wrong, and Hyde was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Truth is that the Orioles were in a no-win situation between Elias’ questionable roster construction and Hyde’s shortcomings as manager being exposed earlier this season. Orioles were already graced with the gift of Hyde being fired; however, it doesn’t seem they will be so lucky with the hope that Elias gets replaced this offseason.
