Yankees Rivals Could Steal Slugger in Free Agency

The New York Yankees landed one of the best bargains of the offseason when they signed Cody Bellinger. The former MVP didn’t just stabilize the outfield during Aaron Judge’s injury setbacks—he added power, defense, and consistency to a roster that continues to struggle with health and depth. But as the season winds down, the Bronx faces the real possibility of losing him to one of its biggest rivals, the Houston Astros.

Astros Emerging as a Suitor

MLB insider Mark Feinsand recently compiled a list of potential free agents, and Bellinger’s name jumps off the page. Feinsand noted that the Astros could make a serious run at signing him this winter.

Yankees fans don’t want to hear it. Houston has served as one of New York’s most challenging postseason obstacles in recent memory, and the thought of Bellinger in orange and navy would send shivers through the Bronx. The Astros currently lead the AL West but remain locked in a tight battle with the Seattle Mariners. Adding Bellinger’s left-handed bat could give them the boost they need to take the division again and reload for another playoff run.

“The versatile slugger has been a perfect fit for the Yankees, but other teams could try to pry the former NL MVP away from New York with the long-term deal that has evaded him to this point,” Feinsand wrote.

The Astros have never hesitated to chase impact players. They’ve retooled their roster repeatedly while keeping their championship window wide open. Bellinger’s ability to play all three outfield spots and first base makes him especially appealing for a club that values flexibility.

What the Yankees Stand to Lose

This season has shown that Bellinger still has plenty left in the tank. In 124 games, he’s launched 26 home runs and produced a .283 batting average with an .847 OPS. His steady production has carried the Yankees through stretches when slumping stars and underwhelming trade acquisitions have dragged the lineup down.

Bellinger’s timing couldn’t be better. By entering free agency, he plans to walk away from a $25 million guarantee on his current deal in pursuit of a long-term contract. His resurgence in New York proves he’s worth the investment, and that’s why teams like Houston will line up to bid for his services.

The Yankees still control the option to keep him. Ownership has shown its financial muscle before, and re-signing Bellinger would send a powerful message to both the clubhouse and the fan base. Allowing him to leave—especially to a direct rival—would sting far more than the usual free-agent losses.

With Aaron Judge spending stretches locked into designated hitter duty because of his elbow, Bellinger’s defensive presence has become invaluable. Losing that kind of production would create a hole the front office might struggle to replace.

For now, the Yankees remain focused on clawing through the final stretch of the season. But the offseason question already looms: will they pay up to keep Cody Bellinger, or risk watching him suit up for the Astros?
