The New York Yankees made a trade to add Cody Bellinger to their roster after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets.

Bellinger has had a great season, slashing .283/.336/.511 with 26 home runs through 124 games. He has a player option in his contract and has set himself up for a lucrative deal if he declines it. MLB insider Mark Feinsand thinks Bellinger is “likely to parlay his strong season into a new long-term deal in free agency.”

Bellinger has played a vital role in the Yankees’ outfield, and the team reportedly is interested in keeping him. However, he should have a strong market if he elects to enter free agency. One team that could make plenty of sense as a squad to steal him from the Yankees would be the Mets.

The Mets are reportedly interested in Bellinger, and he could be an ideal fit for the Mets. Pete Alonso is also likely to opt out of his deal and figures to be one of the best free agents this winter. He may have priced himself out of Queens, but Bellinger could replace him at first base.

Bellinger has shown he can be a reliable first baseman and could slot into the Mets lineup if they lose Alonso. However, the Mets front office is extremely aggressive and has shown it is willing to spend at an unprecedented level. They could, in fact, pay Alonso, and Bellinger could still be an ideal fit.

The Mets also need help in the outfield, and Bellinger would also be able to start there. He is a former MVP and two-time All-Star. His first season in the Bronx has gone great. If Alonso leaves Queens, the Mets could quickly pivot to Bellinger and make him a priority. However, they are still potential candidates to land him even if Alonso re-signs.
