49ers’ Jauan Jennings gets $22 million contract update ahead of Week 1 vs. Seahawks

49ers’ Jauan Jennings gets $22 million contract update ahead of Week 1 vs. Seahawks originally appeared on The Sporting News

Jauan Jennings made it clear earlier this offseason that he’d like a new contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, but right now, it doesn’t appear that one is forthcoming.

But there is new insight into what Jennings might want.

The San Francisco Standard’s veteran reporter Tim Kawakami recently joined local radio station 95.7 The Game to share his latest intel.

“What you hear, not from the camp, but from NFL circles, is that it’s high,” Kawakami said. “It’s above [$20 million per year], is what I’ve heard and maybe a lot above [$20 million] a year, to put him in the top 20 or so of receivers, in that realm. 49ers have done it before with Brandon Aiyuk, so there is precedent for lifting a guy way up in the higher ranks of the receivers.”

The problem? Kawakami said the ‘Niners aren’t interested in doing anything.

“What I’ve heard from the 49ers’ side is they don’t want to do anything,” Kawakami said. “They are negotiating. I think there have been numbers exchanged but they just redid his deal last year and that’s before he got 977 yards receiving. That was before he was [the] first receiver, basically, last year when Aiyuk got hurt. That’s before a lot of other things happened.”

The 20th-highest paid receiver this year is slated to be Davante Adams, according to NBC Sports Bay Area, at $22 million per year.

Jennings just signed a new contract last offseason that was worth up to $15.4 million. NBC Sports Bay Area writes that Jennings has the 42nd-highest salary among receivers.

He’s coming off a career year, with 77 catches for 975 yards and six TDs while spending a large portion of the year as WR1.

The two sides are running out of time.

“Now, at some point, you’ve got to either make a deal or not, and the 49ers want him on the field in Week 1 and Jauan Jennings probably doesn’t want to go on injured reserve or be deactivated or whatever could happen the next few days if he’s not practicing,” Kawakami said. “But everything I’ve heard is, he wants a lot and the 49ers are offering very little, I’ll put it that way, if I can generalize it like that. I think we can all write in what the money terms are based on that, but it’s far apart. I’ve been writing this for several weeks. It’s not close and it’s pretty clear it’s not close.”
